Refinery for Beginners - How does a refinery work?
High school chemistry class was not my shining moment but since then I’ve discovered that science transforms a dirty liquid called crude oil into many useful products we use every day.
Most of this work is done by a refinery and I’d like to give you a visual tour of what a refinery does and how it makes dirty oil into jet fuel so let’s go.
CORRECTIONS and CLARIFICATIONS
Rich Dobbs pointed out that not everything gets vaporized in the crude oil coming in. Although the principle of vaporization holds true, the bottom category of product that results in asphalt doesn't need to be vaporized if everything above it is boiled off and vaporized.
Mr Kim rightly identified that there are other secondary columns that further separate product coming out of the initial crude column that I describe. ...

HOW AN OIL REFINERY WORKS SHELL OIL HISTORIC FILM 71862
Support Our Channel : https://www.patreon.com/PeriscopeFilm
Made in the 1950s by the Shell Oil Company, "Refinery Process" goes behind the scenes at a huge oil refinery to show how crude oil is transformed into finished products. The film uses a combination of animation and live-action to present the story in a simple and entertaining style, how crude oil is separated into major fractions or "cuts". It then describes how complicated molecules are "cracked" into simpler molecules of the lighter, more valuable products by the application of heat and pressure.
This film is one of a series made by Shell as part of its public relations efforts. All the films in the series are well-made and use innovative techniques for their time. The company spent over $1 million dollars in the 1950s -- ...

College of Science Lecture Series 2024 - From Fossil Fuels Refining to Sustainable Plastics
Live from Centennial Hall on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at 7pm with Dr. Jeff Pyun
Will we ever change the way we make plastics? While plastics are ubiquitous in every day life, nearly a century has past with the same processes and materials, which are now accumulating and polluting the world around us. In this talk, Dr. Pyun will discuss his recent invention utilizing alternative waste feed stocks from the petroleum refining industry to create a wholly new class of advanced plastics. This process was invented at the University of Arizona and has quickly changed the way companies and academics think about plastic production.

Mr Kim rightly identified that there are other secondary columns that further separate product coming out of the initial crude column that I describe. The coker process is actually tied to a secondary column rather than the initial one. He also points out that the secondary processing of the heaviest product is vacuum based rather than the heat based process I describe. My explanation is quite simplified compared to the full multi-step process used.

It then describes how complicated molecules are "cracked" into simpler molecules of the lighter, more valuable products by the application of heat and pressure.
This film is one of a series made by Shell as part of its public relations efforts. All the films in the series are well-made and use innovative techniques for their time. The company spent over $1 million dollars in the 1950s -- roughly $10 million in today's world -- on its film library.
An oil refinery or petroleum refinery is an industrial process plant where crude oil is processed and refined into more useful products such as petroleum naphtha, gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt base, heating oil, kerosene and liquefied petroleum gas. Oil refineries are typically large, sprawling industrial complexes with extensive piping running throughout, carrying streams of fluids between large chemical processing units. In many ways, oil refineries use much of the technology of, and can be thought of, as types of chemical plants. The crude oil feedstock has typically been processed by an oil production plant. There is usually an oil depot (tank farm) at or near an oil refinery for the storage of incoming crude oil feedstock as well as bulk liquid products.
An oil refinery is considered an essential part of the downstream side of the petroleum industry.
